Book Review: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

The Hate U Give is an eye opening novel focusing on the controversial topic of police brutality. It was a truly wonderful experience for me and I really enjoyed reading it. In this astonishing young adult novel, 16 year old Starr Carter struggles with living in two worlds: the poor black areas of her home in Garden Heights and the predominantly white suburban prep-school she attends. After witnessing the fatal death of her childhood friend in the hands of a police officer, Starr realizes that the issue of police brutality involves her more than she thinks.

Soon, protests take to action in the streets of Starr’s neighborhood. Some people are calling her friend a drug dealer, a thug, and a gangbanger. Everyone wants to know what truly happened the night of her friend’s murder, and Starr is the only one who can answer that. In order to clear her friends name, Starr must be brave, and reach outside her boundaries.

If this book sounds interesting to you, I highly suggest you read it! It is a very intriguing and highly recommended novel!
