On Tuesday at 7:55 a.m. 17-year-old Austin Wyatt Rollins, who was armed with a gun, shot two other students at Great Mills High School. The two students who have been identified as 16-year-old Jaelynn Willey who is in critical condition and 14-year-old Desmond Barnes who has been discharged from MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. Sheriff Tim Cameron says the shooting was not just a random act of violence. According to reports, Willey had recently ended a relationship with Rollins.
School resource officer Blaine Gaskill responded to the scene within a minute. Gaskill fired around at at Rollins while Rollins simultaneously fired a round at Gaskill. Rollins died and Gaskill was unharmed. This shooting is the 17th one since January 1. “This is what we train for, this is what we prepare for, and this is what we pray we never have to do. On this day we realized our worst nightmare.” Cameron said.
The school went on lockdown for a brief time and were then evactuated from the high school and were taken to a nearby reunification center.
Toni Foreman, who lived next door to Rollins and his family, said he was a good kid from a nice family who used to play catch and ride bikes with her son. ” Whenever snow was out, he would help shovel, I’m just totally floored that it was him.”
