What is up with “Anthem”?

“All the world is a stage and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances.”  Shakespeare famously quoted.

Anthem: Songs of Resistance and Hope, this year’s winter performance, travels beyond Shakespeare’s statement. According to Shakespeare, the players are presenting a character and only showing a fictional life to the audience. But in Anthem, everyone has their own story to tell and will be standing up for what they believe in. It is a time to show the audience who has been hiding behind the actors’ masked appearance.

Some of the songs the cast has been rehearsing include:

1 “A Brand New Day” from The Wiz

2 “Do You Hear the People Sing” from Les Miserables

3 “Not Ready to Make Nice” by The Dixie Chicks

4 “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana*

5 “The Star Spangled Banner”

6 “I Know Where I’ve Been” from Hairspray

Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland

where the Star Spangled Banner was created

But what exactly is an anthem anyway?

Is it just a song that you really like?  A song that represents you? Or gives you hope? Or a song shared by the community?

Whenever I listen to certain songs like “Don’t Stop Believing” or “Santa Fe” from Newsies, I get into a happy zone. Would that be your anthem?

Next column, I will have interviews with people about their ideas of what an anthem is. If you have a strong opinion (or even a weak opinion) about what you think an anthem might mean to you or what song is your anthem, please comment…

Yep. S. Stewart, where ever you are, that’s my answer to what an anthem is.
Bina, don’t be rudina/rudekins. I hadn’t heard of “anthem” before Mr. C announced that the fall show or whenever it is would be anthem. Bina, am I using the term correctly? NVM. Don’t answer.

Oh boy, Evie! Of course I will answer. Don’t Rudina me, only Wyatt who came up with that can (he will receive a glare)! The way of saying the anthem statement would be… I hadn’t heard of an anthem before—

Evie, stop targeting S. Stewart! You don’t know who that is.

    Evie Chien Reply:

Fine. BTW, I wasn’t targeting S. Stewart. I was only trying to help him.

    S. Stewart Reply:

    Him?

    Evie Chien Reply:

Sorry. Used to saying him since in spanish when there’s a group of people, you call everyone using the male version or whatever you call it. Correction: Him/She
